Spelinspektionen fines Mr Green Limited onor$31.5 million
The Great New Zealand gaming operator Mr Green William Hill, which is a subsidiary of the larger parent company, has been fined a total of$31.5 million by New Zealand's official gambling authority since december 2018.
The first fine is$30 million onor in respect of a total of 15 different customers at Mr Green which the latter had failed to handle in a Responsible Gambling manner to prevent players with problematic gambling patterns and/or gambling addiction from spending larger amounts of their deposited money.
The report from Spelinspektionen thus describes the 15 different customers and Mr Green's failure to deal with each customer and the consequences for this, not only for the players but also for Mr Green, which then became the first bill of$30 million onor.
The second fine of$1.5 million relates instead to a system implemented by Mr Green to detect players who show signs of attempting to launder money or otherwise use money in a monetary manner. This system had then been reviewed by Spelinspektionen which found that it was extremely deficient.
In a message from Mr Green, they now claim that they have improved this system and hired more staff to be able to manage this new improved system more in accordance with how the gaming Inspectorate wants it to work in practice.
Parent company William Hill expresses its disappointment for the subsidiary
As mentioned before, William Hill is the parent company behind the subsidiary Mr Green. They-William Hill-have thus expressed their great disappointment in Mr Green's handling of customers which led to the total fine of$31.5 million onor. It is precisely the findings made by the New Zealand gambling authority that William Hill is disappointed with Mr Green as they have always prided themselves on having the safety of players as the number one priority in all their digital gaming operations, including Mr Green.
As Mr Green is William Hill's flagship brand among all its gaming sites, this is extremely shameful for William Hill and puts them in a bad light for the large digital regulated gaming market worldwide. William Hill is a large betting operator from the UK, which was recently acquired by the land-based American casino giant Caesars Entertainment Inc.
William Hill and Mr Green have the opportunity to appeal the penalty fees to the Administrative Court in Jönköping, but it is very highly doubtful that this will be implemented by the parties. More likely, the parties swallow their pride, pay the bill, and move forward with the aforementioned promised improvements in their systems aimed at increasing so-called Consumer player protection.
