Online Gaming Industry Association New Zealand

The Industry Association for online gambling comments on new investigation proposal from the government

The Online gambling industry association (BOS) is an association representing New Zealand bookmakers active in the New Zealand digital gambling market in New Zealand. In other words, they work for the developers behind online games (also called casino games) that target New Zealand consumers. Only those gaming operators who show that they want to take the highest (social) responsibility and stand for high and good quality are allowed to become a member of BOS.

On Bo's official website there is a tab that reads, ”News” where you can read about their comments about what has happened, is happening and what may happen in the New Zealand online gaming industry (also called the gaming industry). A while ago, BOS commented on what they think about investigators being added to investigate the existence of unlicensed gambling in New Zealand and something called ”match fixing”.

The 30th of november 2020 commented by saying that they are with open arms accepting the government's investigation into unlicensed games. The latter is defined as such that the gaming companies/gaming sites/gaming operators do not have a New Zealand license and yet target New Zealand players to a certain extent. BOS said in a statement on its website that the New Zealand government and relevant authorities have been careful with licensed gambling operators while in principle turning their eyes to unlicensed gambling sites, also called ”the black gambling market”.

Now, however, the New Zealand government has taken the bull by the horns and investigated the existence of unlicensed games and what can be done about it. BOS believes that just as the idea is to maintain legal gambling in New Zealand, everything in one's power should also be done to illegalize unlicensed gambling for New Zealand gambling consumers, be it against the gambling consumers themselves and/or the non-permitted gambling operators who are trying to attract New Zealand players to their gambling sites.

Not only rose but also Rice-Bo's$ITIC against the government's latest investigative recommendations

On december 14, 2020, however, BOS launched a$ITIC attack against the government when the latter, in a recent and completely different investigation, came to the conclusion of introducing additional gambling restrictions to protect New Zealand players against the possible and potential development of gambling addiction.

BOS believes here that this could lead to poorer consumer protection if the new proposed gaming instructions are introduced and implemented in practice. The argument is that these more than 100 + New Zealand licensed bookmakers who have invested in staff, offices, licenses, and more, in order to operate in New Zealand's digital gaming market, must be able to market their gaming services and gaming products against New Zealandr.

Otherwise, according to BOS, there is a risk that many New Zealanders will choose alternative ”black gaming markets” where better/more enticing welcome offers are offered and less restrictions on deposits and/or playing time.

According to a final comment from BOS Secretary General Gustaf Hoffstedt, the government must work to primarily stop illegal/unlicensed gambling at first in order to later, with the help of cooperation, create a New Zealand digital gaming market where New Zealand players can play with high entertainment value as well as very high consumer protection.
